Teraphim Word Guide

TRF - (Tav Resh Pey) not kosher, forbidden from eating

Hebrew meaning of the word "Teraphim":

"givers of prosperity; guardians of comforts; household gods of the eastern people; domestic idols; nourishers; the Lares and Penates of the early Hebrews. Images, usually made in the form of a man, used for worship in the people's homes. They were suppose to bring prosperity and good luck. The Israelites used these images often, though the practice was of heathen origin (Gen 31.34, Judges 17.5)

TERAPHIM are small figures of men or gods in form of men. Made of clay, generally; some prob. made of semi-precious stones if worn on body (see SAHARON)  (Budge," Amulets & Superstitions, p. 213-4)

Images or figures or heads which answered questions (see "ushabti," answerers)

TEFROS (Tephras) as revealed in Testament of Solomon, this is evil spirit who brings darkness and sets fires to fields; also a demon of ashes conjured up by Beelzebuoul (Beelezebub) at the behest of Solomon. Not wholly evil, tho, since he cures fever through the power of AZAEL.. Also invoked in the names of BULTALA, THALLEL and MELCHAL (rf Rital Magic, Butler; Secret Lore, Shah; Legend of Jews IV, 151)

TERAPHIM ("obscenity") according to Jewish cabalists of mid-ages, male and female idols, their power deriving from wizardry; they corresp. to serpent imagery, the SERAPHIM, which, in turn, are said to derive from the KABEIRI, Assyria divinities (Judges 17-18; Ez. 21,21; 2Kings; Zohar)
